On Monday, Electronic Arts announced that all 12 teams of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) would be playable in FIFA 23 starting March 15. Those teams will be part of the renamed EA Sports FC when the game comes out in the fall.
Those 12 teams are Angel City FC, Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash, Kansas City Current, NJ/NY Gotham FC, North Carolina, Courage, OL Reign, Orlando Pride, Portland Thorns FC, Racing, Louisville FC, San Diego Wave FC and Washington Spirit. They will join the 12 teams in the Women’s Super League of the United Kingdom and the other 12 teams in France’s Division 1.
The teams will be playable in FIFA 23’s Kick-Off game types, including Classic, House Rules and Volta. They will also be available in Tournament Mode, Head-to-Head, Co-op Seasons and Online Friendlies.
Even though EA Sports did not specify which four NWSL venues would be featured in FIFA 23, the game already includes four MLS stadiums where NWSL clubs play. They are BMO Stadium, Lumen Field, Providence Park and Red Bull Arena.
Andrea Hopelain, EA Sports senior vice president of brand, said that the aims to be a changemaker for women’s football. Hopelain also said the company wanted to offer millions of football lovers unparalleled authenticity.
Meanwhile, NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman explained that the league was thrilled to have the opportunity to demonstrate its prowess “through this unique gaming experience.”
“We can’t wait for fans to begin playing and we look forward to continuing this celebration of the players and the league when we kick off our 11th season on March 25,” Berman said.
UEFA Women’s Champions League
EA Sports had previously promised to add the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the 2023 Women’s World Cup to the game.
Like the NWSL, the UWCL will go live across all platforms on March 15. While FIFA’s NWSL was the first women’s football league in the U.S., UWCL is a top European women’s football competition that features some of Europe’s most formidable teams.
Real Madrid, Juventus, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt are four major teams that will soon join the UWCL’s roster of participating teams.
Players can join those teams to participate in both Exhibition and Kick-Off modes. In addition to that, beginning with the quarterfinals, players can engage in Tournament mode. The aforementioned teams and the rest of the Barclays Women’s Super League will be available to play in the mode.
FIFA women’s leagues
EA made a significant step forward in 2015 by introducing women’s football to the franchise beginning in FIFA 16. International teams such as England, the U.S., Germany and others were among the entries.
This game also made history when the company decided to put Chelsea striker Samantha Kerr on the cover of the Ultimate Edition.
The company researched women’s football, looking at everything from fan culture and communities to play patterns. It also requested Copa 90, a football media business, to make a 400-page report in 2019.
EA Sports vice president of brand, David Jackson, said that the company wanted to ensure that it “delivered with excellence” when doing this.
